The field was built with the help of Nike, the City of Portland and Portland Public Schools, as well as local donors, Roosevelt alumni and the Southlake Church.
The Roosevelt High School football team hosted its first playoff game tonight on a new field of synthetic grass. The turf, which was laid this week, is cushioned by ground-up rubber from athletic shoes called Nike Grind.

Nike, through the Oregon Community Foundation, will grant up to $500,000 a year for three years — up to $1.5 million — to local nonprofits and schools for creating positive social and environmental change through physical activity.
Nike Inc. and the Oregon Community Foundation have teamed up to launch a $1.5 million grant fund for Portland schools and nonprofits.
The fund will award as much as $500,000 annually for three years to nonprofits and schools dedicated to sport and physical activity.
Nike employees will volunteer as part of the effort and sit on its advisory committee.
