Nike Inc. and the Oregon Community Foundation have teamed up to launch a $1.5 million grant fund for Portland schools and nonprofits.

The fund will award as much as $500,000 annually for three years to nonprofits and schools dedicated to sport and physical activity.

Nike employees will volunteer as part of the effort and sit on its advisory committee.

The fund is known as the Nike Employee Grant Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation. It will make awards twice annually to nonprofits and schools in the Portland and Vancouver, Wash. areas.

Awards will range between $5,000 and $20,000. Eighty percent of the money will go to organizations that use sport to effect change. The remaining 20 percent will go to organizations working with children and families.

Deadlines are June 15 and Nov. 15.

Washington County-based Nike (NYSE: NKE) is Oregon’s largest company.

The Oregon Community Foundation is the largest foundation in Oregon, with nearly $1 billion in assets.
