FAIR THEE WELL

The Oregon State Fair is fast approaching, and with it some pretty energetic contests, everything from watermelon-seed spitting to competitive corn shucking to an ice cream “churn-a-ment.” Previous winners have set the bar high: Last year’s 6-year-old watermelon-seed-spitting champion, Benjamin Jacob, spit his seed 10 feet, 7 inches — and fair organizers expect this year’s competition to be just as fierce. For a list of the many opportunities, go to www.oregonstatefair.org/competition/fair-time. And if spitting and shucking just aren’t your thing, don’t forget that the fair is bursting with other fun, like concerts, mechanical bull rides, animal exhibits, a wide range of foods and about a gazillion other things. It all takes place Aug. 27 through Sept. 6 at 2330 17th St. N.E. in Salem. Check it all out at oregonstatefair.org.
