The Portland Farmers Market today announced that the Sunday market in the King neighborhood in inner Northeast, the newest of its five weekly markets, will stay open until Oct. 25.

The market initially was scheduled to end Sept. 27, but organizers had many requests from both vendors and shoppers to extend it.

Since opening in May, the King market has exceeded expectations in sales and attendance, said Ann Forsthoefel, Portland Farmers Market’s executive director.

In July, the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods launched the Foodshare Fund Northeast at the King market to encourage the area’s low-income residents to shop there.

While all the Portland farmers markets accept Oregon Trail food assistance cards, the Foodshare Fund provides a dollar-for-dollar match of food stamp money spent at the market, up to $5 per week. Since the program began, the market has seen the average number of food stamp customers double.

The King market is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays, near the intersection of Northeast Seventh Avenue and Wygant Street.
