The Portland Public School District plans to keep physical education in elementary and middle schools.

A revised budget set to be confirmed by the full board Monday night would require schools to keep at least a part-time PE teacher.

Superintendent Carole Smith had originally proposed trimming the budget by more than $19 million.

PPS budget committee Chairman David Wynde said the board has decided to include $7 million in federal stimulus money it anticipates receiving from the government.

That amount would limit other proposed cuts. Smith suggested cutting 126 teaching positions. Many of the cuts would have affected the physical education department.

The district planned to limit what PE activities could be cut in the future to preserv that option for kids, if such cuts needed to be done again.

It was estimated that would save the district $11.6 million. Smith also proposed nearly $8 million worth of cuts to central operations and special education.

That is the equivalent of 77 full time positions.

Wynde will be interviewed on KGW Straight Talk Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
