Anticipating federal support to save teaching jobs, Superintendent Carole Smith will ask the Portland School Board on Monday to agree to a budget that does not cut as deeply into teaching ranks as previously feared.

While schools still will make reductions for the 2010-11 school year, PPS plans to maintain physical education at younger grades and make fewer cuts to high school staffing.

In May, the Portland School Board approved a $456 million budget for next year that filled a $16 million shortfall using PPS reserves. However, further state budget reductions caused by Oregon’s stagnant economy led to an additional $19 million in cuts.

Superintendent Carole Smith is asking the board to allow her to move forward with the following budget cuts now, totaling just over $13 million:
